Siguen esta mañana las repercusiones después que el directorio de la británica Anglo American confirmó que BHP, la angloaustraliana y mayor minera del mundo, presentó una oferta de fusión “no solicitada, no vinculante y altamente condicional”, según reportaron agencias de noticias internacionales como Reuters y Bloomberg.
La propuesta consistiría en un canje de acciones y estaría antecedida de una operación que permitiría a Anglo American escindir para sus accionistas los negocios que desarrolla en otros minerales la empresa a través de Anglo American Platinum y Kumba Iron Ore.
Se trataría de un negocio multimillonario. La minera británica tiene una capitalización bursátil de más de US$36 mil millones, pero en los últimos doce meses, sus papeles han caído casi 16%. En 2023, la firma reportó una fuerte caída en sus ganancias y ha ajustado sus previsiones de producción de cobre de manera drástica.
BHP opera el mayor yacimiento de cobre del mundo, Escondida, además de Spence y Cerro Colorado.Anglo American, por su parte, opera Los Bronces, El Soldado y Collahuasi, donde tiene el 44% de la propiedad. En la primera, Anglo es socia con Codelco.
Una alianza con Anglo crearía la mayor minera de cobre del mundo antes de la ola de demanda de los nuevos sectores energéticos, y la medida de BHP podría eliminar a otros pretendientes que buscan aumentar su producción.
